Athavale, Lystad & Associates, Inc. (ALA) is a civil and structural engineering DBE consulting firm with offices located in McLean, Virginia, and Bethesda, Maryland. Founded in 1985, ALA has provided professional services in structural engineering, civil engineering, facility/safety inspection, and construction and inspection management for transportation-related projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Our firm has expertise in the design-bid-build and design-build delivery methods for a wide range of public sector clients, including MDOT, VDOT, DDOT, MWAA, and WMATA.

Our philosophy is to consistently produce high-quality engineering solutions within the client's budget and schedule. Our current staff consists of over 50 professional, technical, and support personnel, with over 35% of whom are registered Professional Engineers. ALA is certified as a Minority Business Enterprise/Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (MBE/DBE) with MDOT, VUCP (VDOT and MWAA), MWUCP (DDOT and WMATA), NCDOT, PennDOT, and WVDOT. Services

At ALA, we provide a wide range of services to the transportation sector within the Mid-Atlantic region. Our services include:

• Structural Engineering: Bridge design, pedestrian bridge design, bridge repair/rehabilitation, tunnel design, retaining wall design, noise wall design, facilities design and demolition, maintenance buildings, garages, fuel storage, and transit station and platform design.
• Highway/Roadway Engineering: Highway design, intersection design, geometric improvements, roadway widening, new horizontal and vertical alignments, grading, pavement rehabilitation, and safety improvements.
• Hydrologic/Hydraulic Engineering: Highway culvert and drainage system design, hydrological data collection and analysis, hydraulic study report preparation, erosion and sediment control measure design, stormwater management and flood mitigation structure design, LID stormwater management facility design, and TMDL calculation and development floodplain analysis.
• Site Civil Engineering: Site infrastructure design, including grading, ROW investigation, constructability reviews, and value engineering.
• Facility/Safety Inspection: Identification of access methods and necessary MOT notation of records, all areas of visible bridge distress including, but not limited to, concrete scaling, cracking, spalling, delaminations, exposed reinforcement steel corrosion, section loss, and fatigue-cracking. We also provide facilities safety inspection for bridges, culverts, signs, structures, and retaining walls.
• Construction Inspection and Management: Construction management and inspection for major interstate/interchange construction, as well as for primary and secondary roadways, structures, including bridges, ramps, retaining walls, and tunnels.
