Bridge and Structure Inspections

Our team specializes in structural safety inspections for in-service bridges, including structures of any type or complexity. We also provide damage inspections for overload or impact damage, initial inspections for approval of new structures, and interim inspections for structures that require monitoring intervals in excess of those prescribed by the FHWA. In addition to bridge inspection services, we also inspect buildings, waterfront structures, and ancillary highway structures, such as overhead signs and high-mast light structures.

All of our inspectors are certified by the National Highway Institute and have completed the Safety Inspections of In-Service Bridges Course, Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges, and Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures.

Design Services

Our team of structural engineers is dedicated to fulfilling our clients' project needs, whether those be bridge design, bridge repair/rehabilitation, or waterfront structure design. We also perform structural load ratings for bridges of all structure types for numerous municipalities and state agencies.

Dairy Road Pedestrian Bridge Replacement - Charlottesville, VA

The Dairy Road Pedestrian Bridge Replacement project has recently been completed. The bridge, which consists of a 170' long single span truss, serves as a central pedestrian conduit over Route 250 Bypass. This structure replaced the existing pedestrian bridge, which was rapidly deteriorating and considered functionally obsolete.

VDOT Bridge Inspection Term Contracts

Mid-Atlantic Engineering is currently performing National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) element level safety inspections of highway structures and bridges, and support structures for traffic control devices through Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Limited Services Term Contracts in the Hampton Roads, Richmond, Culpeper, Fredericksburg, Lynchburg, Staunton, and Roanoke Districts. The inspection services include performing field inspections, providing required traffic control and access equipment, preparing inspection reports, and providing recommendations on maintenance and repairs for each structure. Inspections have included both Fatigue Prone and Fracture Critical Structures. All inspections are performed in accordance with the requirements of VDOT and NBIS Standards.

City of Charlottesville On-Call Term Contract

Since 2014, Mid-Atlantic Engineering has represented the structural component of the current on-call term contract for the City of Charlottesville. This contract allows the City to quickly and efficiently obtain structural engineering services when needed, ensuring that the City's infrastructure is well-maintained and safe for the public.
