Harrison Custom Engineering LLC is a dynamic and innovative company that offers comprehensive structural engineering solutions to a diverse range of clients. Our primary focus is on providing client-focused service and creative structural solutions that cater to the specific needs of each project. We specialize in the structural design and detailing of single-family and multi-family residential projects, as well as the structural survey of existing buildings.

Our team is led by Ben Harrison, a registered professional engineer with over 10 years of experience in designing and detailing wood, steel, and concrete structures. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering and has extensive experience in the structural design and detailing of custom single-family homes. Ben is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and is licensed to practice in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Colorado, and Washington DC.

• Single-Family Residential: We provide creative solutions to address the unique conditions common in single-family homes. Our services include coordination with architects to ensure that project requirements are met, as well as the preparation of structural drawings for permitting and construction. These drawings include structural specifications and notes, framing plans, lateral bracing plans, and sections. We also conduct detailed reviews of proposed layout plans to help coordinate architectural, MEP, and structural requirements, and identify low-impact cost-saving options.

• Multi-Family Residential: Our team offers structural design and custom detailing for multi-family residential projects. This includes coordination with architects to ensure that project requirements are met, and the preparation of structural drawings for permitting and construction. These drawings include structural specifications and notes, framing plans, lateral bracing plans, and sections. We also provide detailed reviews of proposed layout plans to help coordinate architectural, MEP, and structural requirements, and identify low-impact cost-saving options.

• Survey of Existing Structures: We offer structural surveys of existing buildings to identify areas of concern. Our services include a comprehensive report summarizing structural findings, identifying issues that were discovered, and providing recommendations for repairs as needed.

Recent Projects

Harrison Custom Engineering LLC has worked on a variety of exciting projects over the years. Some of our recent projects include:

• Sculpture Support, Columbia, MD: We provided structural design services for the interior support posts of twin sculptures located on an elevated concrete deck.

• Tall Wall Design, Harpers Ferry, WV: We designed and detailed a main level "tall wall" within a private residence to resist both in-plane and out-of-plane wind forces.

• Detached Garage, Charles Town, WV: We provided structural design services for a 1000 square foot detached garage structure with a 2nd story office space.

• Rear Addition, Chantilly, VA: We provided structural design services for a screened-in porch addition at the rear of an existing private residence.

• Retaining Walls, Shepherdstown, WV: We designed two adjacent concrete retaining walls which allow for access to a basement door while providing support for grading against the adjacent foundation wall.

• Rowhouse Addition, SE Washington, DC: We provided structural design services for a two-story addition to an existing rowhouse with a rooftop terrace.
