Celebrate, Promote, inform in service to Connecticut

The Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE) is a private, non-profit public-service institution patterned after the National Academy of Sciences. Established in 1976, CASE identifies and studies issues and technological advances that are or should be of concern to the people of Connecticut, and provides unbiased, expert advice on science- and technology-related issues to state government and other Connecticut institutions.

History and Mission

CASE was chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1976 as a 200-member organization whose main purpose was to advise state government and industry "in the application of science and engineering to the economic and social welfare." (Special Act No. 76-53). Today, CASE is comprised of distinguished scientists and engineers from Connecticut's academic, industrial, and institutional communities.

Membership and Activities

CASE members are elected based on recognition of their scientific and engineering distinction achieved through significant contributions in theory or applications. Members must live or work in Connecticut and are elected by the current membership on the basis of their accomplishments in science, engineering, and/or technology.

The primary purpose of CASE is to provide science and technology information and advice, usually by performing studies, on public policy issues upon request of a government agency, the General Assembly, or in some instances, private organizations. These studies result in formal Reports published by CASE.

In addition to studies, CASE is involved in several other activities, including:

  • Awards to student winners of science competitions
  • Providing funding for science and technology initiatives
  • Publishing the CASE Bulletin, a quarterly publication featuring articles on new developments in science and technology around the state

Funding and Support

CASE receives funding from state agencies and the General Assembly for the purpose of performing studies and other tasks. Other funding to support the mission of CASE comes in the form of support from CASE's Patrons, other organizations, and the membership of CASE.

Publications and Communications

CASE publishes the CASE Bulletin, a quarterly publication featuring articles on new developments in science and technology around the state. The Academy also issues a variety of reports and briefings on science and technology-related issues.
